Sainik School Sambalpur is the 33rd Sainik School in the country and the second in the state of Odisha. The foundation stone was laid by Shri Naveen Patnaik, the Chief Minister of Odisha, on 27th February 2015. The new building and infrastructure were developed within five years.

The concept of Sainik Schools was conceived by Mr. V.K. Krishna Menon, the Defence Minister of India, in the early 1960s. He believed that establishing a school with elements of a military lifestyle in each state could significantly contribute to creating a robust infrastructure for recruitment into the National Defence Academy (NDA). Thus, Sainik Schools were established across various states in the country.

सैनिक स्कूल संबलपुर देश का 33वां और ओडिशा राज्य का दूसरा सैनिक स्कूल है। इसका शिलान्यास ओडिशा के मुख्यमंत्री श्री नवीन पटनायक जी द्वारा 27 फरवरी 2015 को किया गया था। नई इमारत और बुनियादी ढांचे का निर्माण पांच वर्षों के भीतर पूरा किया गया।

सैनिक स्कूलों की अवधारणा भारत के रक्षा मंत्री श्री वी.के. कृष्ण मेनन द्वारा 1960 के दशक की शुरुआत में प्रस्तुत की गई थी। उनका मानना था कि प्रत्येक राज्य में सैन्य जीवन शैली के मूल तत्वों वाला एक स्कूल स्थापित किया जाए, तो यह राष्ट्रीय रक्षा अकादमी (एनडीए) में भर्ती के लिए एक मजबूत आधार तैयार करने में सहायक हो सकता है। इसी सोच के तहत देश के विभिन्न राज्यों में सैनिक स्कूलों की स्थापना की गई।
